Jeema Party President Basalirwa detained

Justice Forum Party President Asuman Basalirwa was last night intercepted on his way to Kabale and detained at Nsangi Police Post in the outskirts of Kampala.

The opposition politician who works with Kamba & Co. Advocates was travelling to the far west to represent his client, Kawempe Division Mayor Munyagwa Mubarak, in court.

Mr. Munyagwa was arrested last week in Kampala, allegedly tortured at the notorious Special Investigations Unit at Kireka and eventually whisked to a prison hundreds of kilometers away – Ndorwa Government Prison in Kabale. It was in this district, prosecutors allege, that Munyagwa called on residents to engage in acts of violence at a political rally last month.

Before being remanded to prison on Friday, Munyagwa was charged with inciting violence before a Grade II Magistrate’s Court (in Kabale) whose presiding judge said he had no jurisdiction over the case.

Munyagwa was scheduled to reappear in court today, Monday. Mr. Basalirwa, his lawyer, is famous for defending politicians and activists, including UPC President Olara Otunnu, facing what many view as politically-motivated charges. The Jeema leader has himself severally faced charges of that nature.

Facing similar charges is Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and FDC women leader Ingrid Turinawe.

In a text message sent to The Campus Journal current affairs website, Basalirwa said, “We have been detained at Nsangi Police on our way to Kabale to represent Munyagwa in court.”

This publication is still trying to contact Police authorities to establish the reasons behind the detention. One thing is clear though: the interception and detention of Basalirwa shall be interpreted by many as interference in the course of justice.
